With graduation around the corner, I’ve been reflecting on the most valuable takeaways from my four years in college. Plot twist: none of my most important takeaways came from a classroom. Instead, I learned the most from all the people I was lucky enough to meet during my time at school.
These takeaways are not only relevant for college students, but they also apply in the working world too. Here are my top 5 takeaways from college:
- People make life meaningful.
- You don’t have to know all the answers.
- You don’t have to be the most qualified to be the most successful.
- Perfectionism is inefficient.
- You can learn anything you want, probably for free.
1. People make life meaningful.
When I reflect back on my time in college, I’m going to remember the memories with all the amazing people I got to meet. If you are one of those people, know that I will always cherish the time we spent together. And if we haven’t met yet, please reach out!
Regardless of how we know each other or how much time we spent together, I want you to know that I consider you a friend and if I can ever help you in the future, please do not hesitate to reach out!
I learned something from every single person I met. Know that you made an impact on my life, whether we were close for all four years or we only talked for an hour. I am so grateful for all the strangers that have become my friends.
The people I got to connect with will forever remain the best part of college for me.
2. You don’t have to know all the answers.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t know all the answers. You just need to know what questions to ask and who to ask. The more questions you ask, the more you can learn.
3. You don’t have to be the most qualified to be the most successful.
The most successful people I’ve met aren’t necessarily the smartest or the most skilled. Instead, they are the ones who go for it. Good things come to those who go out and make it happen.
Sometimes the people who are more intelligent can run every potential negative outcome in their mind and accordingly, would never take the risk. A lot of successful people later said they would never have started their business if they knew all the obstacles they would face.
Don’t discredit yourself. If you want something, find a way to make it happen.
4. Perfectionism is inefficient.
Perfectionism is a glamourized term that means you don’t use time as efficiently as possible. As a highly detail-oriented person, this is one I’ve struggled with in the past.
After a certain point, additional effort into the project reaches a point of diminishing returns. That means the time it takes to make an additional improvement doesn’t add enough value for it to be worth your time.
Perfectionism can stop people from moving forward. Instead, recognize when good is good enough. You can always find a way to make something better, so if you are waiting for perfection, you will be waiting forever.
5. You can learn anything you want.
Anyone can learn about any topic. You could read a book, watch a YouTube video, listen to a podcast, take an online course, and so many more ways.
The best part is that you can learn about many things completely free online.
